Audition Season coming up
When you go to an audition, remember all the things you are thinking and feeling like nervousness, will they pick me, did I wear the right leotard, are my shoes ok, how do I look, OMG I’m so scared. Well here news, everyone else is feeling the same too. Be positive, be visible , be kind to others, and don’t be disruptive. Position yourself in the classroom where you can be seen, but never at the expense of others. Getting somewhere or something at someone else’s expense is not nice and also not necessary. You have to have enough faith in yourself to get it on your own. You got this far so just do it.
Commit fully to every part of the audition even when you feel unsure. Confidence and clarity in your movement often matter more than perfect accuracy. Apply corrections immediately. Demonstrating to the people in front that you are easy to work with, open to corrections and serious about wanting to work for them. Adaptability and professionalism is a major differentiator. Project your performance quality. Facial expression, intention, and energy should be present from the first moment. Don’t judge or decide ahead of time what or who you think they are looking for. You don’t know. So don’t assume. Be open. Finding a job is part of your journey, sometimes this journey will be easier than at other times. Try to see the cup half full and not half empty. Try to learn something from each audition you go to and let it help you in the next one. Try to understand what rejection is. It is rarely about your ability alone. It often depends on height, look, chemistry, availability, or specific company needs. If they loose a short girl they will look for a short girl and if they need tall girl they will take tall. This has no bearing on you. Most professional dancers get rejected more than they are taken. This is just par for the course.
Don’t compare yourself, don’t judge yourself, don’t beat yourself up , accept it and move on to the next audition. Take what you have learned and know that your time will come.
In my next blog we will talk about how to dress and present yourself for the audition
Till then , my teacher always said to me never try to be like anyone else. “Be an original” So go out there and be original.
bye for now Lynne
